Q. How can I help my child have a good experience?
A.
Be positive. Your child is showing to get what we call
"show miles,"
experience performing in a competitive arena.
It should be fun,
and the
emphasis should be on learning, riding to the best of your abilities and
enjoying getting to do something new with your horse, rather than on winning
ribbons.
Like any other sport, this should be fun for children. Understand
that your child may be nervous and even become scared,
especially if they
see another
rider fall. Your trainer will help you with this - that's part of what
your
coaching fee is for.
Be encouraging and positive and be sure to
compliment your
child on what they did well,
even if they didn't get a ribbon.
It might be a
good idea to attend a horse show before you actually show,
and watch classes to get a feel for how things go and
what to expect.
